Choosing the right retaining wall block system

There are two block systems we use most. The traditional angular retaining wall block creates a stepped setback as the wall rises, providing natural reinforcement through weight distribution, which suits many standard slope applications.

The pin system block allows near-vertical construction, using a durable composite pin to interlock each course. It gives more design flexibility in tighter spaces where an upright profile is needed. Which one is right depends on site conditions, wall height, available space and the wider design.

Creating a strong foundation for long-term performance

The strength of any wall begins below grade. We excavate and prepare a base trench, then install and compact a foundation layer of high-quality aggregate.

The first course is levelled carefully and set into concrete to create a secure structural start, and we run rebar support rods through the lower courses as additional insurance against movement. That foundation is what carries the wall through freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rainfall and changing soil pressure.

Proper drainage: the key to retaining wall longevity

Water management is the single most important part of retaining wall construction. Without drainage, hydrostatic pressure builds behind the wall and leads to failure or premature deterioration.

We install a dedicated drainage zone of roughly sixteen inches of clean gravel backfill, with permeable drainage fabric between the gravel and the native soil so fines cannot clog the system. Water moves freely away from the wall while the soil stays separated and stable. Outlet pipes and dispersion points are added where site conditions call for them.
